Day 3 - Sibu Food Trail to Sarikei


Day 3 : Sibu - Sarikei - Sibu

The task of the day? Eat like a local! :p
Another early morning for us, we rise and shine to a bowl of luxurious superb fresh water prawn noodle.

Mouth-watering thick noodles served with one whole fresh and succulent prawn in a flavourful broth.

Another must try if you are in Sibu. Wonderfully aromatic, springy noodles topped with char siew and chili flakes. For a little spicy and tartness, feel free to add in the accompaniment chili sauce.

SARIKEI
After a satisfying breakfast, we head over to the pepper farm at Bintangor. Did you know Sarawak is the largest pepper producer in Malaysia? Thus, our trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to the pepper farm.

The plantation has been around for the last 25 years now has about 600 plants. 


Fun facts! Apparently, both white and black peppers come from the same plant. After flowering, it takes about 9 months before the ripe berries could be picked. White pepper generally fetched higher prices than black pepper, because it's process involves more steps.

The pepper farm we visited is located at Bintangor with no exact address.

Back to our food adventure, we make a quick stop for Bintangor's signature local favourite foods, Tumpi. This simple and tasty delicacy literally looks like a pancake, is a traditional Melanau food made from sago and coconut.

There are 2 varieties of tumpi, the regular price at RM3.50 and the special at RM6.00 per piece.
The special is a savory version, filled generously with prawns.

While the regular is the plain sago pancake with shredded coconut..

For those prefer sweeter, you could also enjoy it with apong (palm sugar).

Pak Cik Hj. Abang Saini has been selling tumpi for years, skillfully pan baked each piece to perfection. Simply irresistible!

Another favourite snack here, the mouth-watering rojak. RM5.00
What makes the Malaysian style fruits and vegetables salad served here unique, was the larger bits of peanuts and the addition of sweet potatoes in the rojak. Not to mention, the sauce is also much sweeter and less spicy compared to the West Malaysia.

Well known for the best and authentic Foo Chow cuisines in town, we had our lunch at the Golden Happiness Restaurant. The restaurant has been around for over 10 years whip up really hearty and nutritious soup. Also worth mentioning is the delicious Foo Chow sticky rice cake stir fried with leeks, mushroom, black fungus, carrot and onions. The rice cake is also called 'Bai Guo' has a nice chewy texture.

Ba Zhen soup
A popular soup among the Chinese for maintaining good health, the piping hot soup was delicious with a subtle sweetness from the herbs.

The soup is boiled for hours with all these amazing and nutritious herbs.

Another herb soup with pork and dried squid, this light yet tasty soup is really good for re-energize ourselves after a long day.

Simplicity at its best! One of the most memorable dishes I had in Sibu, the tastiest vegetables ever.

There's nothing like biting into a sweet and juicy pineapple! The best way to end our meal on a sweet note with the iconic Sarikei pineapple.

The dried shrimp in Sibu is totally different from West Malaysia.

Back to Sibu, we drop by at the Sibu Central Market, the largest indoor market in Malaysia. The locals frequented here for fresh local produce, meats, greens, fruits and sundries.

Only in Sibu, the live chickens sold here are wrapped with newspaper. 

We also took a stroll along the Sibu Night Market. There are over 100 stalls selling a variety of local foods, from halal to non halal, definitely good cheap eats.



Besides foods, there is also a wide array of handicraft, jewellery, clothes, accessories and many more available for purchase. After we've done with our shopping here, we headed over to Cafe Cafe for our dinner. While all the dishes served were amazing, I would like to highlight a few that's pretty memorable to me. 

Tomato and cincalok omelette rice.

Delicious and fragrant fried rice drizzled with cincalok mayonnaise. 

Dayak style lemongrass lamb
The lamb braised Dayak style was tasty and aromatic, but when the fermented beancurd is mixed in, it brings the taste sensation to a whole new level.


Chau chai noodle soup with prawns (Rice vermicelli noodle with sour vegetable)
Yet another unique Foo Chow dish, the noodle soup was delicious and appetizing.
