Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh @ Old Klang Road (Review)

Calling all lamb lovers! I'm thrilled to introduce this newly opened restaurant tucked away along Old Klang Road, Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh. As the name suggests, Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh is famed for its one-of-a-kind lamb bone soup "Yang Kut Teh", which embodies the fusion of China and Malaysian cuisine, much like the backgrounds of its owners, Low Wei Hong and his wife Zhang Yulin. This dish represents a unique culinary innovation, blending the flavours of Cantonese lamb brisket pot from China with Malaysia's beloved bah kut teh, Malaysia's first-ever "Yang Kut Teh", focusing on the broth's essence.

What makes their Yang Kut Teh stand out from the typical lamb brisket pot is the broth itself. The most iconic local soup, bah kut teh, is made by stewing meat and bones with herbs and spices, creating a flavourful broth. Drawing from this inspiration, they have transformed the lamb brisket pot into a soup-focused dish, served in either clay pots or bowls. It is ideal for solo diners or family-style meals, offering the perfect serving size for any occasion. The combination of these two culinary traditions has resulted in Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh, a wholesome dish that blends China and Malaysian flavours.

Rich and creamy, the Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh's broth is simmered over low heat for 7 to 8 hours, infused with a mix of 11 herbs and spices. This slow-cooking technique and the perfect combination of ingredients resulting in a flavourful and nourishing broth. On top of that, they use premium New Zealand lamb, renowned for its tender and succulent meat, which hardly has any gamey flavour. I highly recommend it!

Unlike Malaysia’s famous bak kut teh, the essence of Yang Kut Teh lies in the broth, which is made entirely from lamb bones and lamb meat. The way it's consumed is similar to bak kut teh, which is why it’s called Yang Kut Teh.”

Lamb Bone RM16.90

Another must-try dish is the bowl of lamb bones, which are only available in limited quantities each day. To enjoy this dish, firstly, you'll need to use a straw to savor the marrow, then scoop a spoonful of broth into the bone cavity before enjoying the rich sweetness of the marrow combined with the broth.

At Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh, you can savour a true “whole lamb feast,” featuring a variety of lamb dishes, including lamb tripe, lamb neck, lamb belly, and lamb shank. They also offer dishes such as boiled lamb slices with their special sauce, pan-fried lamb dumplings and deep-fried lamb meatballs and more.

For those not a fan of lamb, the mixed mushrooms chicken pot is just as enjoyable. It's a fragrant, rich soup filled with the earthy taste of eight varieties of premium mushrooms and a hint of herbal flavour.

Smacked Cucumber Salad RM9.90

Lamb is often misunderstood for being too “heaty” and not ideal for regular consumption. But in actual fact, lamb is warm in nature and offers a variety of health benefits, including nourishing yin, replenishing qi, aiding digestion, and warming the body. Moreover, the herbs and spices used in Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh are also warming, so you don't have to worry about feeling overly heaty after enjoying the dish. Instead, it provides a comforting and nourishing effect.

Overall, the food was excellent and reasonably priced. Be sure to check out Ba Fang Yang Kut Teh today for a new culinary experience that blends the rich cultures of China and Malaysia.
